CITIZEN SCHOOLS NEW YORK
AT URBAN ASSEMBLY ACADEMY OF ARTS & LETTERS

OBJECTIVE:
This semester students learn to design, develop and manufacture a holiday cookie.
The objective is to teach:
_All natural ingredients used in a baked snack
_How to create a Holiday-themed product idea
_Learn to bake and manufacture treats
_Learn about packaging and assembly
_Learn the business of selling and marketing the goods
_Distribution
The class is broken up into four "companies":








Each company will create their own original cookie and compete to have their cookie win one of two slots to be produced and sold to the public. Winning companies will be chosen through the "Tasting Menu Celebration" on December 1st.
PARTICIPANTS:
- 21 students
- Grades 6, 7 and 8

AT ISAAC NEWTON MIDDLE SCHOOL
EAST HARLEM, NY

OBJECTIVE:
Through Citizen Schools, teach an apprenticeship over the course of a semester during the after-school hours at Isaac Newton Middle School in East Harlem. We taught middle-school students how to design, produce, market and sell an original line of fashionable eco-themed tee shirts.

PARTICIPANTS:
- 6 students
- Ages ranging from 10-13 years old


RESULTS:
At the end of the apprenticeship a tee shirt design will be chosen for each grade to wear in the upcoming school year. The voting process will take place in the school as well as online. Voting begins Thursday, April 2. Additionally, the students will participate in the Earth Day New York at Grand Central Station on April 24 and 25th in which they will promote and sell their designs.

- Ages ranging from 10-13 years old

RESULTS:
At the end of the apprenticeship in which students showcase what they’ve accomplished, all the designs were revewled at a special event held at the Musem of the City of New York. Those attending voted for their favorite designs in which the top three will then be produced and sold. Portion of the profits will go to Citizen Schools to support more hands-on learning projects for middle-school students!
